All forged cutting dies can be “bent” in three different ways to effect the best cutting results of difficulties in a particular material:

  • Regular Bend - This is normal bending with no attention paid to what happens to the back of the die while fitting to the cutting edge. This sometimes makes the die “tight” on the inside. Most dies are bent this way and will successfully cut, for the most part, all soft and pliable materials.
  • Straight Wall - This die’s wall is relieved slightly so material does not stick in the die. The inside wall of the dies are nearly perpendicular, thus the name “straight inside wall” or SIW. They are frequently utilized to prevent undercutting on stacked materials and were clean ejection is necessary
  • Clear Thru or Clearance - This die’s wall is especially relieved to allow cut parts to come out the back of the die. This type of wall construction is desirable in cases where a converter must cut rigid or non-flexible materials and not cause any damage to the edges of the diecut. It also allows for the rigid part to be easily removed from the die, up through the die or ejected out the front of the die.

Die Steel Heights and Thickness

  • Standard heights of all steel cutting dies are: 3/4”, 1 1/4”, 2”, 2 1/4”, 3 1/2”, 4”, although any height can be produced by custom fabrication and surface grinding.
  • Standard thickness’ are normally 1/8”, 3/16” and 1/4”, with some higher steel blades up to 1/2” thick as used in paper cutting, envelope cutting and plastic packaging trim.

Forged Dies or Clicker Dies are able to cut many types of materials and various types of products. From specialty gasket dies and vacuum forming trim tools to more simplified collar and sole dies forged dies have the durability to perform well under most circumstances.
